Twentieth Annual Ten Commandments Post

This is my twentieth annual Ten Commandments post.  Can you believe it's been that long!?  When I started out doing this, I had no idea that talking about my favorite movie would last this long, or that I could come up with enough things to talk about for all these years.  But here goes!

Now, being a musician myself, I can identify with all the music in the movie.  I'm not talking about the incidental music that's played in the background, composed by Elmer Bernstein for the soundtrack, but the music played onscreen by the characters in the movie (or pretended to play.)  Because of this, I'm going to spotlight the various instruments these people played.  The movie seemed very accurate with the instruments found in The Bible, so I'll work my way through the movie, starting at the beginning.  I'm not going to picture every scene that has instruments, just an overview of all that were used.

First up is an all-girl group that predates The Go-Go's; by a long shot!  I see a stringed instrument like a lute with a long neck; something like a bamboo flute; and a lyre - or harp.  They can be spotted in the background of this scene:

How's this for a horn and percussion section?  Welcoming Moses back to the palace after he'd been away for a while on business:

Here's another all-girl group who have been banished from the main stage and told to go in the house and play:

A random woman playing a tambourine:

:

Here's a Peeping Tom, err.... Peeping Joshua, watching his girlfriend, Lilia, through her window while she plays her lyre:

Here's a random man signalling that it's time to gather up for The Exodus.  He's blowing on a shofar.  Shofar so good:

Here's someone else signalling for the horn players to announce that it's time to leave Egypt.  I believe that's a shofar as well:

And here is that horn section in action.  Blow men, blow!:

Here are two drummers just pounding away.  I don't know which one, but one of them is actually Herb Alpert; of The Tijuana Brass fame.  He foregoes his usual trumpet for a kettle drum.  This guy's good!:

Well, there you have the instruments found in this excellent movie from 1956.  Have a good Easter and I'll see you again next year.
